Their intimate wedding consisted of a small group of their closest family and friends. After a stop for photos at the beach, it was off to Harbor Point in Barnstable for the reception. Once living in North Carolina, they now call Cape Cod home.

The early evening presented gorgeous weather in which they enjoyed the cocktail hour on the Ocean Terrace overlooking Cape Cod Bay. The reception was held in the Mansion Ballroom... stunning as always!

Hurricane Irene - August 28, 2011

Hurricane Irene moved up the east coast into New England on Sunday August 28, 2011. These images were all taken in Chatham that morning. The Chatham Coast Guard station had the hurricane flags flyin', which is a rare sight this far north and some business in town boarded up in preparation for the storm's arrival. Luckily winds only topped out around 50-65mph. Still strong enough to bring down tons of trees and branches but luckily no structural damage. The highest wind gust on the Cape was recorded near Otis ANGB at 72mph. The Cape was on the dry eastern side of the storm and received little to no rain. Unlike our neighbors in Vermont and western New England, the Cape dodged the bullet again.

I've been neglecting the blog somewhat this summer so I promise to get some new weddings online soon! Its been a very busy season so far with nine beautiful weddings in the month of July alone!! Love it!!

2011 PPOCC Night Photography Workshop

Last night I led a workshop on night photography with the local group of pro photographers I belong to, the Professional Photographers of Cape Cod (PPOCC). We had a group of about 20 attend and it was a great success and a lot of fun! The last night photography session I did with the PPOCC was in 2009 at Race Point Beach in Provincetown, this year we wanted to be more centrally located for members and decided on Sand Neck Beach in Barnstable.

The group members tried out various techniques including time exposures, painting with light and star trails. The pesky New England weather did decide to toss in some clouds but we were able to catch a few breaks and see some stars. I think the highlight though was a beautiful fly over of the International Space Station! Some members even captured it in their photos! Very cool!

Discovery's Final Flight STS-133

Hi all,

Earlier this week, I took a trip down to Florida to photograph the final launch of space shuttle Discovery. Since its first flight way back in 1984, she has been the workhorse of the American space program. It has flown to space more than any other craft, and it has carried more crew members to orbit. It was the first spacecraft to retrieve a satellite and bring it back to Earth. It has visited two space stations. It launched a telescope that has seen deeper in space and in time than ever before. And twice it has demonstrated the United States' will to persevere following devastating tragedy, returning America to orbit following the two worst accidents in space history.

Although all five vehicles that have comprised NASA's space shuttle fleet are unmatched in achievements, space shuttle Discovery is unique among the extraordinary.

In 39 trips to space, Discovery has spent 365 days in orbit, a full year, and longer than any other spacecraft in history. Discovery has circled Earth 5,830 times, all the while speeding along at 17,400 miles per hour. It has traveled almost 148 million miles. That equals over 288 round trips to the moon or about one and a half trips to the sun. Pretty cool!!

I met up with friends Chris Hetlage and Tom Davis. Chris is from Norcross, Georgia and Tom is a fellow pro photographer here on the Cape.

I decided to shoot with a Canon 40D, a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM lens and a Canon 1.4x TC. This gave me an effective FL of 896mm. My location on the NASA Causeway was 6.2 miles from the launch pad, so I'd need every bit of that focal length. :-)

Here are my favorites images as well as a short 4 min video I did with a inexpensive Flip video camera. The video is nice to have since it helps capture the emotion of the event including the reaction of the surrounding crowd as well as the rumble of the solid rocket boosters.

If you've never seen a shuttle launch, I highly recommend it!! There are now only two flights left before the end of the shuttle program, so plan accordingly.

Ellen & Michael - Ocean Edge

One of my favorite weddings of the season! Ellen & Michael were married on Saturday September 11th at the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Harwichport with their reception in the magnificent Ocean Edge ballroom. Ellen showcased a stunning Vera Wang gown that was very similar to the one Chelsea Clinton wore at her wedding. It was a strapless, raw-edged laser cut swirling silk organza ball skirt with train. I must say that I've seen a lot of weddings dresses but this one was just totally amazing... and I'm a guy!! ;-') Her shoes were purple satin Manolo Blahnik's that contrasted amazingly well with the dress. So cool!

Hi all!

Thought I'd share some of my favorites from Amy & David's beautiful Ocean Edge wedding on September 5th. We began the day with getting ready and family photos at Ocean Edge. Amy & David were then married at the Dennis Union Church in Dennis Village. On the way back to Ocean Edge, we stopped at the old Brewster Store on 6A. This is a great place to get ice cream during the summer and it also makes for some wicked fun wedding pics! :) The cocktail hour was then held on the fabulous Ocean Terrace.... an awesome place for cocktails during the summer months! I thought it was time to start working on the blog again by adding some more recent weddings from the 2010 wedding season. Below are my favorites from Christina & Chris' beautiful wedding on September 4th.

As some of you may remember, Sept 4th was the day Hurricane Earl was forecasted to hit the Cape... as it turned out, the forecast was totally wrong, thankfully!!!, and the hurricane passed out to sea leaving a sunny and breezy day. Christina & Chris were married at St. Pius X in South Yarmouth with a tented reception at the family's home in Brewster, the Cape Cod Sea Camps.

Marcy & Jeff - July Sizzler

Its been a wicked busy summer but now that fall is just around the corner, I hope it get caught up on posting all the amazing weddings I've been shooting this season.

Here are some of my favorites from Marcy and Jeff's wedding on a hot and sunny July 10th. They were an amazing couple to work with.... so fun so happy and so in love. Their ceremony was at Our Lady of the Cape church in Brewster. We then stopped at Cold Storage Beach in East Dennis for some beach photos and then off to the Scargo Tower... one of the highest points on Cape Cod with some really cool photo ops! The reception was then held at the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis. The CCMOA is such a wonderful location for a wedding reception... the cocktail hour was inside in the main museum building where guests could walk around and look at all the galleries etc.... very cool! The dinner was in a tent on the front lawn. If you are thinking about a tented reception site, I highly recommend you look at the CCMOA.

Chapin's Catering in Dennis provided the amazing food and The Slackers kept the crowd dancing all night and Stop & Shop in East Harwich did the amazingly beautiful flowers! It was great working with everyone!

Air Force One

I thought I'd share some photos I took today of Air Force One parked on the tarmac at Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod (previously Otis AFB). The jet brought President Obama to the Cape where he then boarded Marine One over to the Vineyard for one of the first family's summer vacations.

A friend of mine who is a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy was generous enough to get me into the base with him so I could take these images. I photographed Air Force One last summer as it landed at the base but I was no where near as close as this... this time I was only around 100 yards from the aircraft. The MP's at the base were also kind enough to let me take photos.... although they said "make it quick and don't linger too long"..... ;-) There was a Secret Service guy in the black Suburban SUV checking us out but he left us alone...

I hope you enjoy the photos of this beautiful aircraft.

Stacie & Michael - Chatham Bars Inn

Hey everyone!

I'm now up to posting July weddings so here's the first.... Stacie & Michael were married at the beach side Boat House at the Chatham Bars Inn on July 9th. As always, CBI was beautiful. We had some of that good old Chatham fog that this part of the Cape is known for... especially in the summer. It actually turned out to be amazing conditions for photography. The fog was just lite enough to create one mega soft box out of the Sun.... the light was so soft and gorgeous... for a photographer, it was in heaven... :-)

I also have to give a bit of a background on one of the photos.... if you've ever been to CBI, you know that they always keep a old Ford car parked out in front of the main inn... it makes for some great photos with the bride and groom... well, getting Michael to take a photo in front of a Ford automobile was not the easiest..... lol!!! You see, Mike is a big car guy and is a Chevy man at heart.... so it was a big deal to be seen next to a Ford, especially on his wedding day! So I'm glad Stacie convinced him to take the photo.... it's a favorite of mine....not so sure about Mike though..... ha!!! Long live the Ford vs. Chevy debate...... and yes, we all know which one is king..... Chevy!!... right Mike...... :-)

Congratulations to Stacie and Michael for tying the knot! And also thanks to Kate and the whole staff at CBI for making it such a pleasure to work there!

Leanne & Charlie - June 19th

Hi all,

Here are some images from Leanne & Charlie's wedding on June 19th. It was a beautiful day with warm temps and bright blue skies... a perfect Cape Cod day! They were married at Corpus Christi church in Sandwich... this is one of my favorite churches for photography.... the natural light inside is just awesome. The architecture inside is great as well.

After the ceremony, we went on over to the beach at Barnstable Harbor. This is a great spot since it looks out over to Sandy Neck and the Sandy Neck Lighthouse. After capturing some great shots at the beach, we headed over to Anthony's of Cummaquid for the reception. This facility has one of the best views on Cape Cod!

I'd like to thank my clients, Leanne & Charlie for such a great day! What fun!! It was also great to work with DJ Danny Walsh who rocked it all evening, Sue Hobart for creating the beautiful and amazing flowers and bouquets and Trolleys by Tes for providing the transportation for the wedding party after the ceremony.

Karen & Christian - Lighthouse Inn

Karen & Christian were married on June 18th at the Lighthouse Inn in West Dennis during a intimate seaside ceremony overlooking Nantucket Sound. The evening was gorgeous with some amazingly warm soft light that made all the outdoor photos just pop.... hard to beat the "sweet light" as we photographers like to call it. :-)

As always, Bill at the Lighthouse Inn did a amazing job, Cupcake Charlie's provided their amazing and yummy cupcakes, flowers were done by Bella's Blooms and the Hip Pocket Orchestra keep everyone dancing into the night. What a great wedding... enjoy the photos!

Kim & Bill - Captian Linnell House

White Mountains - Bristlecone Pine Forest

On the drive back to Southern California to catch my flight home, my father and I decided to take a side trip up to the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. The bristlecone pines are found high in the White Mountains near the Nevada border near Big Pine, California. These trees are known to be some of the oldest living organisms on Earth... some dating back over 4800 years!!! While some of the trees may look dead, they are actually still living.... amazing! All of the photos below were taken from Patriarch Grove at 11,350ft.

Capturing the High Sierra - Part 6

Again, from Minaret Summit at 9300ft, I captured some nightscape images of the Ritter Range. This sub range of the Sierra is one of the most beautiful.... its high peaks are dominated by the jagged saw like 12,281 ft. Minarets on the left, Mt. Ritter at 13,157 ft. at center and 12,945 ft Banner Peak on the right.

I actually tried the moonlit shot you see below, at bottom, back in 1995 on Fujicolor Super G 800 Plus film. At the time, I thought the results were pretty good.... but now with digital, there's no comparison.... digital rules!

Capturing the High Sierra - Part 5 (Sierra Starlight)

As a lot of you know, I love shootin' the night sky... so how could I pass up the night sky in the High Sierra... :-) All these images were taken from Minaret Summit at 9300ft on the crest. The sky up there is DARK and I mean DARK..... there is no haze or air pollution like you find at lower elevations.....up here, you really do feel closer to the stars. The Milky Way is stunningly clear and arches from horizon to horizon. I used the Canon 5D at ISO 3200 and either a Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 fisheye or EF 17-40mm f/4 L lens. Exposures were only around 30-60 seconds. Here are four views of our home galaxy.

I've always wanted to capture this view of the eastern Sierra. When you're driving north up route 395 and approach the town of Mammoth Lakes, you are greeted by this scene.... I like it because of the contrast between high desert scrub brush in the foreground and the jagged snow capped peaks in the distance... it's just plain sweet imo. One shot is a wide angle while the other has more telephoto workin'. The wide angle is going big in the studio! Which one do you like?

These photos were taken while hiking around the top of Mammoth Mountain. From its 11,053 ft summit, the views are quite breathtaking. I had fun using the 15mm fisheye as well as the 17-40L. It's hard to capture in photographs the feeling of being at the summit, I hope I succeeded to some degree....

For you non b&w fans, here are some of my favorite color images.... including several sunrise shots of the Mammoth Crest. One of the most magical experiences is to watch the sunrise on the high peaks of the Sierra. The light at daybreak (and also at sunset) in the mountains is called 'alpenglow'. Its warm soft light only lasts about 10 min and then its gone.

Capturing the High Sierra - Part 1

I recently decided to take a long weekend and travel out to California to see my dad. It was one of the few weekends I had free all summer from my very busy wedding and portrait season.

To give a quick background, before moving to the Cape, he and I had always gone up to the Sierra every year for our annual hiking/backpacking/photography trip. It had been over 8 years since I had been up into these stunningly beautiful mountains so we decided it was time to do a father/son trip again. I've been to many different regions including South Lake, Lake Sabrina, Rock Creek, Pioneer Basin, Pine Creek, Yosemite, Tioga, Tuolumne Meadows and Mammoth Lakes. We decided to go back to Mammoth Lakes. This region is one of my favorites... high snow clad peaks, tons of high alpine lakes, good fishing and amazing hiking trails. Below are the first in a series of images that I took during the trip. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed shooting them! :-)

These four b&w's were taken just north of Bishop off route 395. Besides the eastern escarpment around Mt. Whitney, this is one of the most dramatic views in the eastern Sierra.

Where does Route 6 start or end?

Anyone that lives on or has visited Cape Cod knows about Route 6 aka the "Mid-Cape highway". Everyone also knows that it goes from the Sagamore Bridge to Provincetown but did you know that Route 6 was actually one of the first trans-continental highways built in the US? Yep, it goes all the way to California.... and during a recent hiking and photography trip to the Sierra Nevada mountains, I found the other end of Route 6... :-) The western end is located in the small town of Bishop, California near the Nevada state line. Here's a self-portrait of me by the sign... it's only 3205 miles to Ptown!!!

Here are some of my favorite images from the first wedding of the 2010 season!!! Jen and Kevin were married on Saturday May 8th at Our Lady of the Cape church in Brewster with a beautiful reception at the Ocean Edge Resort. We had a few sprinkles to start but some beautiful May weather showed itself as the Sun popped out and blue skies graced us for the rest of the day.... I was so happy for Jen & Kevin as we were able to get tons of shots down at the beach as well as in front of the Carriage House. Love it! :-)

Launch of Shuttle Atlantis STS-132

I just returned from a photo shoot in Florida to capture the last launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis. I have been wanting to see a shuttle launch since I was a kid. I remember my dad and I trying to see the launch of one of the very first shuttles, Columbia, back in the early 1980's. I think it was STS-3 or maybe STS 4? I can't really remember the exact one. Unfortunately, the launch was scrubbed that day and we didn't get it see it. My next try was about 27 years later in May of 2009 for STS-125, the Hubble servicing mission. Again, unfortunately, a last minute change in the launch schedule did not permit me to view this one either.... such a bummer!! So, with only three launches remaining in the shuttle program, I was determined to see one in person!! My planning started around March of this year after talking with my friend Chris Hetlage in Georgia. We determined STS-132 on May 14th would be a good choice. After confirming with him and making travel arrangements, we met up in Titusville on May 13th both hoping to capture one of the most spectacular sights you can witness... a NASA shuttle launch!!!

Chris viewed the launch from the Banana Creek site near the VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building) and me from the Causeway... both are excellent locations and highly restricted. I must mention that these images would not have been possible without my very understanding wife and my NASA friends Dixie, Luis and Sue for allowing me to join them at the NASA Causeway viewing site. Access to this site is highly restricted and only a limited amount of people are able to gain access. I will be forever indebted to them!! Thank you so much guys!! :-) For those that aren't aware, the Causeway is one of the closest viewing sites for a shuttle launch. I was exactly 6.2 miles from the launch pad. That may sound like a long way but not when it comes to launching massive rockets. Very cool!

Below are my favorite images from the trip. I decided to use my trusty Canon 40D with a Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM telephoto lens and a Canon 1.4x teleconverter. This would give me the equivalent of a 896mm lens on a full frame body. Btw, the 400mm 5.6L is one of Canon's sharpest lenses and it did not disappoint! It is a great lens in bright daylight and highly recommended. For the wide angle exhaust trail images, I used a Canon 5D and a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM lens. Enjoy the views!

Here's a night shot of launch pad 39A all lit up the night before launch taken from Titusville. What a cool sight!

A photo of me prior to launch... you can see the 400mm 5.6L & 1.4x TC mounted on the 40D and a Manfrotto tripod.

Below are my favs of the actual launch. While the photos are neat to have.... nothing compares to watching it in person. Between the blazing bright flare like exhaust of the SRB's, the crackling rumble sound that sweeps over you like a giant wave and the cheers and clapping of the crowd... it was a very awesome experience!

Here are some wide angle images of the exhaust trail as the shuttle climbs higher and higher into a beautiful blue Florida sky. There's also a capture of the crowd on the causeway. I heard on a local tv station later that night that over 300,000 people watched the launch from either Titusville or somewhere inside the Kennedy Space Center!

I was working on designing Kari & Jeff's Zookbinders wedding album and came across these images. I didn't post them last season for some reason but they definitely deserve to be on the blog.

At the time, Jeff mentioned incorporating his recently rebuilt 4x4 Chevy pickup truck in some of their wedding shots... I thought it was a great idea! These were some of my favorites images created that day. Jeff & Kari were married out on Sandy Neck. Thanks again guys for such a great time!

Spectacular Solar Halo

I was in the studio this afternoon working on wedding album designs when I decided to take a break and head outside to enjoy the beautiful spring day here on the Cape. I looked up and saw this amazing 22° solar halo surrounding the Sun..... I just had to run back inside and grab the camera! :-) To capture the wide field of view you see in the image, I used a 15mm fisheye on the Canon 5D which covers 180°.

A 22° solar halo is an optical phenomenon forming a circle 22° around the sun. It forms as sunlight is refracted in hexagonal ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere... usually from high altitude cirrus clouds.

Check out the magical sweet light just before sunrise! The mountains in the distance are the San Bernardino's crowned by 11,502 ft San Gorgonio Peak, 80 miles away.

A clearing winter storm over the snow laden San Jacinto Mountains. The actual summit of 10,804 ft San Jacinto Peak is hidden in the clouds. It was a facinating sight to watch the clouds swirl around the mountains.

This image was taken near Indio and shows a grove of date palms.... again, just amazing afternoon light. So cool!!

Sunrise in The City of Angels

Hi all,

I just returned from a week in Southern California visiting family and friends and thought I'd share the first in a series of landscape photographs. This image of downtown Los Angeles at sunrise was captured on a very clear morning at around 6:15am on March 10th. It was taken from the top of Signal Hill near Long Beach with a Canon 40D and 70-200mm f/2.8 L lens mounted on a Manfrotto tripod. The skyscrapers are over 17 miles away while the San Gabriel Mountains can be seen in the background.

The Wreck of the 'Ruth & Gail'

The 48ft fishing boat Ruth & Gail ran aground the evening of February 28th on Cold Storage beach in East Dennis after losing engine power. The boat was a casualty of the powerful Nor'easter that has been pounding the Cape with snow, rain and high winds for the last several days.

Here's a photo taken this afternoon with the Canon 5D & 17-40L lens.

Rebekah & Andrew - Wequassett Resort

Hi all!

Here are some images from Rebekah and Andrew's beautiful fall wedding on October 24th at the Wequassett Resort. It was also the last wedding of the 2009 wedding season for me.... and boy, what a great wedding to end the season! Rebekah and Andrew were so great to work with... we captured some cool shots that day. I especially like the ones of her and Andrew on the veranda... great job guys.... you both could be pro level models! :-) And to top it off, at the end of the wedding, guests were treated to a rainbow out over Pleasant Bay! Wow!!!

Kaitlyn & Ross - Hyannisport Club

I've edited through some of my favorites from Kaitlyn and Ross' wedding on October 11th. As seemed to be the case with most fall weddings last season it was another stunning fall day. A little breezy at times but abundant sunshine and blue skies galore. We started the day off with photos of Kaitlyn getting ready at her parents home in Cummaquid. Then it was off to the ceremony at Our Lady of Victory church in Centerville with a reception to follow at the always beautiful Hyannisport Club. The Club has one of the most spectacular sunset views on the Cape... check out the last photo.

Audra & David - Fall beach wedding

Hey everyone,

Here are some shots from Audra & David's seaside wedding at Corporation Beach in Dennis on October 10th. It was a beautiful fall afternoon on the Cape with sunshine and temps around 60°.... can't ask for more than that in mid October! :-) After the ceremony they had their reception at the always nice Old Yarmouth Inn on Route 6A. While we still had sunlight we headed back to the Kelly Chapel behind the Inn to grab some shots. I especially like the portraits of Audra next to the old wagon wheel while the yellowish/green leaves of fall create a beautiful seasonal backdrop.

Abby & Patrick - Nauset Beach

Abby & Patrick were married at Nauset Beach on October 2nd. It was a small intimate wedding with just a handful of friends and family. They picked Nauset since it's one of the most spectacular beaches on the Cape... and it did not disappoint!

On top of photographing such a fun couple, the light at Nauset that evening was unreal... it was so soft and glowing I was in a photo nirvana... ;-) When you hear the tern 'Cape Light', this is it... Cape Light is a unique light that has made Cape Cod famous with photographers and painters the world over... it was a very unique quality to it... once you see it, you'll know.

One of my favorite images from the evening is of Abby by herself on the tidal flat. The soft pastel light almost makes her look as if she's part of a painting. So very cool. Love it!!

Hi everyone!

Here are some of my favorite images from Amy & Jimmy's wedding on October 3rd in Falmouth. As it turned out, we all enjoyed a rain free day with the ceremony and reception at the Falmouth Yacht Club as well as photos down at Nobska Lighthouse... and no rain!! Yippee!!... the forecast was much different!

Being big baseball fans, it was great fun to shoot them at the lighthouse with the Red Sox umbrella.... a nice touch. :-) Congratulations you two... I had so much fun!!

Goodbye 2009...Hello 2010!

I hope everyone had a great holiday season!!! Thank you to all my wonderful clients this year for allowing me to capture your wedding and be a part of your family on such a important day!! Also, thank you to my beach portrait clients for a wonderful summer season!!

Now that the year has come to an end, I thought I would post this cozy winter scene that I photographed in Brewster as the final blog post to 2009. This old saltbox house was built in 1719 and is one of the oldest homes in Brewster and Cape Cod.

Also, this image was used by The Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank as their 2009 holiday card... pretty neat! Thank you to CC5 for selecting my image!! :-)

I hope everyone enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday! It's hard to believe that it is already December! I've been wicked busy with proof albums, wedding album production and holiday card and print orders but I wanted to share some of my favorite images from Nicole & Steve's spectacular wedding on September 25th at the always stunning Chatham Bars Inn.

They tied the knot in a beautiful seaside ceremony down on the south lawn at CBI. It was a gorgeous September day with blue skies and puffy white clouds... the day every couple dreams about for their wedding day... :-) After the ceremony we took full advantage of the grounds and beach at CBI. Being late September the beach grass was turning a beautiful golden color... a sign that fall was not far off. We also captured some very cool shots of Nicole next to the old Ford car that is parked out in front of the main inn. These are some of my favorites images from the day... the rustic look and feel of the car contrasted nicely with a beautiful and happy bride... :-) An amazing reception in the main dinning room concluded the day. So much fun!!! Congratulations again Nicole & Steve and all the best on your new life together!

Katherine & Julian - Nobska Light & Coonamessett Inn

Katherine and Julian decided to have a destination wedding on Cape Cod and picked September 26th. They're currently living in Oklahoma but thought the Cape would be a great spot for a wedding... I couldn't agree more!!! :-) They had a spectacular day so before the ceremony and reception we took advantage of the weather and went down to Nobska Lighthouse. Nobska is such a neat area.... one of my favorite locations on the Cape. Congratulations guys.... so when are you moving to the Cape? :-)

Meghan & Dan - Oyster Harbors Club

Now that the 2009 wedding season is pretty much over here on the Cape, I am starting to have some time to update the blog with current weddings from the last few months. Below are my favorites from Meg & Dan's beautiful wedding on September 19th at Our Lady of the Assumption and the Oyster Harbors Club in Osterville. It was a gorgeous day and we were able to take advantage of some nice soft light…. especially when shooting Meg and Dan down at the club's private beach. I just love this kind of light! :-) Congratulations Meg and Dan... what an awesome day!!!!
